HABITAT GARDENS- POLLINATORS

Back in elementary school, we learned about the importance of pollination for the development of flowers and ultimately seeds.

With roughly 30% of the human food supply dependent upon pollination for development, it is important that we foster habitat environments for pollinators in our gardens.

Often the honey bee is first to mind when people think about pollination, however a well developed habitat garden will encourage the more glamorous butterflies and active hummingbirds to your garden as well.

Plant list for pollinators-  Here is a short list of plants that I like to use in the Sonoma area-

Ceanothus-  Native evergreen shrub, low water and deer resistant.

Baccharis pilularis- Coyote Bush.  Hardy evergreen shrub.  Good habitat plant for larger gardens. It provides food and protection for birds.

Sunflowers.  Annual, deer resistant.

Verbena bonariensis, Cosmos

Lavender, Rosemary, Salvia, Thyme

Many summer produce plants:  Corn, Eggplant, Squash, Tomatoes
