ROBERT HEWITT

Robert’s life and work experience have influenced his understanding of the landscaped environment and design philosophy. Growing up in Carmel, Robert developed his love of nature and passion for gardening. Throughout the year, Robert would work for elderly neighbors who had a deep appreciation for gardening, but not the physical capacity to do the work. Robert’s education and work experience continued while attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

After graduating from Cal Poly, a desire to see the world led him to Japan where he lived for four years. While there, he spent much of his free time studying Japanese culture including design and flower arrangement. When it became time to leave Japan, Robert departed by ferry, continuing his westward journey to Europe by taking the trans-Mongolian railroad.

Upon returning to the US, Robert entered the nascent tech industry in the Bay Area. Working in management roles for companies such as Sony and THX, Robert was able to use his international experience while continuing to travel and study foreign cultures.

Robert has lived in Sonoma, CA since 1996. During this time he has further developed his horticultural and design sense through countless hours working in his two-acre garden and advancing his education at College of Marin, Sonoma State University and the Santa Rosa Junior College.

GARDEN PHILOSOPHY

GARDEN PHILOSOPHY ~ A few questions for Robert…

WHY SONOMA?

Sonoma has a fantastic environment and deep rooted culture of food, wine and design. The outdoor landscape provides a perfect venue to integrate these elements. The garden provides an opportunity to entertain and engage all of our senses.

WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY?

I love to be outdoors. My goal is to create environments that encourage the user to spend time outdoors and interact with the garden throughout the seasons. Rather than having a dedicated herb or vegetable garden, I like to incorporate vegetables throughout the garden; interweaving edible plants on an annual basis keeps the garden dynamic. Exploring the garden to harvest herbs and vegetables is one way to ensure that you spend time throughout the entire garden.

WHAT PLANT MATERIAL ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT CURRENTLY?

During the summer, I enjoy the quick splash provided by larger annuals. It is exciting to experience the magical transformation of a sunflower from a seed to an 8 foot giant in a matter of a few months. As an added benefit, the sunflower is a great source of food for the bees and then the birds once they go to seed. This year I planted swaths of dill to fill in and provide some blast to more staid perennials. The development of light wispy foliage topped by exploding blossoms and the transformation to symmetrical seed heads is a great experience that takes place in such a short period of time.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LANDSCAPE DESIGN?

I like that it is dynamic. Each season has its distinct look. Designing elements that provide form and color for different seasons keeps the garden fresh. Also, I love following the life cycle of plants. I derive great satisfaction from propagating plants whether it be from seed, cutting or division. The year winds down collecting seeds for the promise and excitement that the following spring holds.
